What affects the operating life of a power supply?

Operating temperature, shock and vibration, in-rush overcurrent, and mounting position (direction) can all impact operating life. Typically, the power supply operating life depends on the service life of the power supply’s aluminum electrolytic capacitors. Under normal conditions, the power supply’s expected service life can be calculated from the temperature of the electrolytic capacitors. The expected service life calculation assumes the power supply operates at its rated input voltage, powers a load that is 50% of the supply max, operates at 40°C, is mounted in standard position, and is operating 24/7.
